The Guild –series (2007-2013)

The Guild movie Kickstarter was officially announced this spring so let’s talk about the series! For many it’s a nostalgic trip down memory lane to the days of raiding and arenas. An era of World of Warcraft.

The Guild is a comedy web series written by Felicia Day. She is seen in the series as Cyd Sherman (healing cleric Codex). The show is about an MMORPG game guild called The Knights of Good. Codex tries to live a normal life and haven’t met guildies offline before their gnome Warlock Zaboo (Sandeep Parikh) is standing on her doorstep. Codex tries to make sence to the situation by asking the whole guild to have a meeting face-to-face. And so their guild leader Vork (Jeff Lewis), ranger Tinkerballa (Amy Okuda), rogue Bladezz (Vincent Caso) and mage Clara (Robin Thorsen) finally meet up with Codex and Zaboo.

Jeff Lewis as Vork.

The relatability and humor

Most of the humor in The Guild is self-ironic observations of gamers, silly game-themed wording and re-framing of the game aspects to real life. People in the guild are in different phases of life having their own struggles but they all come together as a video game guild. And that’s where the banter comes at – and it works!

Sandeep as Zaboo does a brilliant job as portraying a young guy going above and beyond to have a girlfriend. I’ve come across that type of players and I think the performance hits the nail on the head. And Vork is awesome character! It’s propably a personal preference but I really like straight-faced comedic reliefs. Vork (Jeff Lewis) is so absorbed in his truth and view that he is serious about things most people won’t give a second thought. Bladezz (Vicent Caso) tries to hit on everyone online trying to mask his insecurities. Tinkerballa (Amy Okuda) is isterested about her personal gains and Clara (Robin Thorsen) is in for the good times.

The era and the nostalgy

I don’t dip too heavily on how the jokes have aged since I’m nostalgic about the subject myself. (Sandeep) was involved with many of the india-themed ideas and found them funny so I won’t be throwing the “woke” shit on people enjoying themselves while watching the show. And actors get assumably along pretty well since they have played together on stream after the series had ended.

People that play WoW as comfort MMORGP or used to are propably ones to appreciate The Guild -series. The Guild started before Geek and Sundry and bigger game shows we know today. Will Wheaton is also starring in The Guild as the leader of the competing guild “Axis of Anarchy”. So if you’re a fan of his I highly recommend to watch his performance in The Guild if you haven’t done so already.
